According to the Encyclopedia Brittanica, the 1993 first edition of this book, entitled Mothering the Mother, helped popularize the term “doula” that was first used by anthropologist Dana Raphael in a 1969 article. The book succinctly discusses all the advantages one can get from having a doula at one’s birth: an enhanced birth experience, reduced discomfort, pain and anxiety, positive outcomes for the partner, and better postpartum care.
